چکیده

Abstract. We investigate the sensitivity of turbine-height wind speed forecast to initial condition (IC) uncertainties over Columbia River Gorge (CRG) and Basin (CRB) for two typical weather phenomena, i.e., local-thermal-gradient-induced marine air intrusion a cold frontal passage. Four types anomalies their associated IC related local thermal gradients large-scale circulations are identified using self-organizing map (SOM) technique. The four SOM categorized into patterns, each accounting half ensemble members. first pattern corresponds that alter through modulating system, which produces strongest in CRG CRB. In second pattern, moderate gradient circulation jointly contribute anomaly. analyze cross section temperature gorge explore evolution vertical features type. induced by more concentrated near front. contrast, found above surface anomalies. Moreover, accuracy CRB is limited few specific regions, e.g., 2 m within basin northeast Pacific around 140∘ W.

Basin-scale stream-flow forecasting using the information of large-scale atmospheric circulation phenomena

It is well recognized that the time series of hydrologic variables, such as rainfall and streamflow are significantly influenced by various large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns. The influence of El Niño-southern oscillation (ENSO) on hydrologic variables, through hydroclimatic teleconnection, is recognized throughout the world. Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR) has been proved to be...

Wind speed reductions by large-scale wind turbine deployments lower turbine efficiencies and set low generation limits.

Wind turbines generate electricity by removing kinetic energy from the atmosphere. Large numbers of wind turbines are likely to reduce wind speeds, which lowers estimates of electricity generation from what would be presumed from unaffected conditions. Here, we test how well wind power limits that account for this effect can be estimated without explicitly simulating atmospheric dynamics. We fi...

On the Relation Between the Large-Scale Tropospheric Circulation and Air Quality in Tehran

The large-scale tropospheric circulation can play a controlling role in the accumulation and ventilation of air pollutants. It thus impacts air quality in large urban areas. This paper investigates the statistical relations between the dynamical indices related to circulation in the troposphere and visibility as a surrogate for air pollution in the urban area of Tehran for the climatological pe...
